What is bronchopulmonary dysplasia?
Bronchopulmonary dysplasia is a serious lung condition in infants. It most often affects premature infants who need oxygen therapy after birth.
Symptoms
Common symptoms include:
- rapid breathing
- flaring of the nostrils
- pulling in of the chest with each breath
Diagnosis
Premature babies who continue to need oxygen after 36 weeks gestation are diagnosed with bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Your child’s doctor may also do other tests, such as x-rays or blood tests, to confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment
Treatment for bronchopulmonary dysplasia depends on the baby’s gestational age and overall health. Treatment may include:
- extra oxygen
- mechanical ventilation with gradual weaning
- medications to help open airways and reduce inflammation
