Initiates and ensures the quality of pharmacy drug distribution services in an outpatient oncology infusion clinic. Assumes the direct responsibility for the safe preparation and distribution of medication, including cancer chemotherapy IV admixtures, in accordance with laws and regulations governing pharmacists and the practice of pharmacy by the appropriate state and federal agencies. This position requires independent decision making, clinical judgment and in-depth knowledge of oncology, cancer chemotherapy regimens, and pharmacotherapeutics.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Practices in accordance with the laws, rules, and regulations of the New York Board of Registration in Pharmacy, Department of Public Health, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Drug Enforcement Administration and in accordance with established policies and procedures. Maintains certification and credentials in accordance with the Board of Registration
  • Ensures quality assurance procedures are followed, and maintains compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards
  • Responsible for order entry, verification, and preparation of chemotherapy and supportive care medications including investigational agents. Works closely with the interdisciplinary team to optimize treatment outcomes, including, but not limited to, supportive care recommendations, chemotherapy dose adjustments, drug interactions, therapeutic duplications, and laboratory monitoring
  • Evaluates chemotherapy orders for accuracy and appropriateness. Provides final product double check of pharmacist work for accuracy prior to dispensing
    Provides information to patients, their care givers, and medical staff concerning dosage, proper administration, incompatibilities, interactions, adverse effects, and appropriate use of cancer medications
  • Manage and improve the medication-use process in the oncology infusion clinic area
  • Responsible for the daily operations of assigned areas. Manages workload and coordinates personnel in teamwork within the environment
  • Resolves operational problems arising in specific area. Assists in the development and maintenance of pharmacy policies and procedures and provide cares as described in the departments polices/procedures

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Pharmacy. Doctoral degree preferred in Pharmacy
  • License required: Pharmacist
  • 1-2 years related work experience in an oncology setting
  • Licensed Registered Pharmacist in New York
  • Working knowledge of oncology drugs, IV additive preparations and the handling of investigational agents
  • Must be able to wear special protective equipment required for the preparation of hazardous substances and spill clean up

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Direct patient care experience in an oncology setting, preferably in an academic medical center setting
  • ASHP accredited residency and BPS board certification in oncology is a plus
